Memory Care

Aviva Memory Care is a new approach that infuses memory care neighborhoods with a vibrant rhythm of life that’s often missing from other cognitive care settings. At AVIVA Hills memory care in Canton, OH, residents make meaningful connections through music, dance, art, food, movement and sensory stimulation. Our highly engaged team uses relationship-based care methods centered on your loved ones’ unique needs at every level, honoring their individuality and caring for all their needs.

Aviva Memory Care:
A Holistic Approach to Care

At AVIVA, we utilize knowledge from an individual’s Lifetime Memoir to aid in the development of each whole-person care plan. This information, along with pertinent medical information from the resident’s medical team, will be utilized to create a whole-person care plan for every VitaVivet Specialty Care resident.

Each of our residents has abilities, skills and interest, unique to them. At AVIVA, we focus on the abilities of each of our residents (rather than inabilities and barriers) and use the uniqueness of each individual to tailor a holistic approach to care.

Pain is the leading cause of challenging behaviors related to dementia. Many people living with dementia have difficulty communicating pain; VitaVivet Specialty Care team members are trained to recognize the non-verbal signs of pain and respond with solutions tailored for that individual.

Aviva Memory Care Signature Programs

Listening to familiar music, playing instruments, and singing are all part of the AVIVA Music program. Research has shown that music therapy helps people with dementia to lower stress levels, reduce agitation and improve cognition.

Movement is key for healthy aging. Encouragingly, studies also show that rhythmic dancing can slow the progress of dementia. It can help to revive energy, prevent falls, increase activity and foster general feelings of well-being.

A diet that’s good for the heart is also good for the brain and overall health, and that’s just what we serve at AVIVA Hills! There’s evidence that a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruit, vegetables and cereals, and low in red meat and sugar may help reduce dementia risks. That’s why you’ll find so many delicious Mediterranean-inspired entrees on our menu.

Sensory stimulation has been shown to decrease agitation, reduce restlessness and even improve sleep. By creating sensory experiences with everyday objects that engage one or more of the senses, we’re able to evoke positive memories and feelings.

Research shows that therapy dogs and pet visits can increase social engagement and movement and elevate the mood long after the visit is over. VitaVivet integrates animals into all aspects of our engagement and wellness programs and promotes meaningful interactions between animals and our residents.

From outdoor walks to gardening activities, access to fresh air and sunlight, we keep residents connected to the natural world. Time spent in natural surroundings has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve sleep.

Bringing children and seniors together does wonderful things for both. Seniors become more engaged, and there are positive effects on young visitors. VitaVivet utilizes intergenerational programming to help our residents make meaningful connections that bring joy and laugher to both our residents and the children participating in our programs.

Travel can happen in many ways, from actually traveling to a new country, to learning about its culture, history, food and beauty as part of an armchair travelogue group. The AVIVA Explorers program offers an opportunity to explore the food, music and culture of countries around the world right from the comfort of AVIVA Hills.

Regular Yoga & Tai Chi exercise has been proven to enlarge the brain and enhances the cognitive abilities of the elderly. Benefits for individuals with dementia often include pain relief, relaxation, increased socialization and empowerment.

Having a chance to enjoy the outdoors is one of the gardening benefits people with dementia often enjoy most. It can also lower agitation and anxiety, improve quality of sleep and give them a sense of accomplishment. We create a safe, secure gardening environment for our residents, one that everyone can enjoy.

VitaVivet’s Muse Over Reminiscing is an engagement tool that uses all the senses—sight, touch, taste, smell and sound—to help individuals with dementia remember events, people and places from their past lives. As part of the engagement, care partners may use everyday objects in various activities to help individuals recall memories.

Meditation helps participants feel calmer and more relaxed, lessening perceived stress and anxiety. Meditation also helps manage moods, and reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which has been known to exacerbate dementia symptoms.

The hand-under-hand dining technique is a guiding and assisting technique, in which family members or caregivers place their hand under the resident’s hand to guide a spoon or fork to their mouth. It promotes a physical touch connection that is friendly and comforting.

We know that for family and friends, the emotional and physical demands of caring for someone living with dementia can be overwhelming. The Family & Friends Café offers a place to relax, be nurtured, meet and support one another. Our memory care staff are there to provide answers to family questions, and also offer resources and services for additional support.

Activities that stimulate the brain are just as important as physical exercise. Puzzles and cognitive games encourage problem-solving, which can be stimulating and fun.

Often for individuals with dementia, they become confused with too many choices. However, providing choice for residents is a critical aspect of honoring one’s personhood and engaging in a holistic approach to care. By giving residents the information they need to make a decision, explaining things in ways that are easier to understand, and giving them time to think over a choice, we’re able to respect individual choices, values and preferences.

At an AVIVA community, when one spouse is experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia, the other can continue to live under the same roof and in close proximity to maintain this important relationship. Spouses have the freedom to visit and stay connected whenever they wish, dine together and continue their healthy, meaningful bond.
