Founded in 1805 by Bezaleel Wells, Canton grew significantly due to its strategic location and the Ohio and Erie Canal development. The city is closely associated with William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, who practiced law here and conducted his famous “Front Porch Campaign” from his home during the 1896 presidential election.
